Instructions
Start with a magic ring: Wrap the yarn around your finger to create a ring. Chain 3 into the ring (this counts as the first double crochet).
Round 1: Make 2 double crochets into the ring. Chain 2. Make 3 double crochets into the ring, then chain 2. Repeat this 2 more times. Chain 2 and join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to complete the round.
Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet). Make 2 double crochets into the same corner (chain 2 space). Chain 2 and make 3 more double crochets into the same corner. Move to the next corner and make (3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets). Repeat this in each corner. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to complete the round.
Round 3 and subsequent rounds: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet). Make 2 double crochets into the same space. In the corners, make (3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets). In the spaces between corners, make (3 double crochets). Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to complete each round.
Finishing the motif: Continue until the motif is the desired size. Finish with a round of single crochets to even out the edges. Cut and fasten off the yarn. Weave in the ends on the back.
Additional Notes
Color Changes: Use different colors for each round to create a colorful motif. Change colors at the end of each round, starting the new color with a slip stitch.
Joining Motifs: Join multiple granny square motifs to create blankets, pillow covers, or other projects. Join the motifs using a needle or crochet hook.
Yarn and Hook Choice: Using medium weight yarn and an appropriately sized hook makes it easier to see and control your stitches.
